This is Nathaniel Jr. Saltonstall, born 18 December 1776, died 16 August 1859, son of Nathaniel Saltonstall. (born 1727, died 1807) who was a well known captain of Connecticut naval privateer ships during the American Revolutionary War. He was in command of the old fort at New London at the beginning of the war.

His grand father, also a Nathanial Saltonstall, was born on July 1, 1707 and died already in 1748. He was a son of Gurdon Saltonstall (1666 - 1724), Colonial Governor of Connecticut and Elizabeth Saltonstall.

The Saltonstall family belongs to the early settlers of America.
